The Üble Schlucht is perhaps the most impressive gorge in Vorarlberg. Due to the danger of falling rocks, it is often impassable. In summer, however, after prior inspection and repair it opens to visitors. Once in the gorge, you’re greeted by vertical and overhanging rockfaces with siliceous limestone. These are some of Vorarlberg’s hardest rock layers, cutting into sheer depth with little width. The inherent impassability of the gorge means it's a place largely untouched by humans. At lower altitudes, there are only a few such primeval landscapes left in Vorarlberg, complete with spellbinding gorge vegetation.
From Laterns-Thal (the former Löwen Guesthouse), the signposted trail leads across meadows to the entrance of the gorge at Fluhschrofen.
After crossing through the gorge, turn around and take the same path back to the starting point.
The path through the Üble Schlucht is marked as an alpine trail. Even in high summer, caution is always advised due to moisture on the paths, stairs and bridges.
Good shoes, waterproof clothing.
